Setting up the call termination issues as the top agenda, new chairman of the telecom regulator, BTRC, Shahjahan Mahmood hinted that he would go for political intervention to collect the outstanding due to different operators. ‘Not only our (BTRC) legal department is working for the outstanding due but also different legal firms are also involved with the issues. You (journalists) also know sometimes the issue would not be only a legal aspect as there is political involvement…after the legal decision, if the money is not collected, I will raise the issue to the highest political level,’ he vowed. Shahjahan, who has taken the charge of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on October 26, expressed the determination at the view-exchange meeting with the reporters at his office on Monday. Different types of operators including cellular phone, IGW owe several hundred crore of taka to the telecom regulator as revenue sharing. At his first appearance before the journalists, Shahjahan fixed call termination as top most agenda at his working list for the next three months. He said ‘my first priority is to set up a standard level of call termination which could be followed as benchmark to maintain it.
