The new head of telecom regulator on Monday hinted that he would go for political intervention to recover outstanding bills from the operators.
Not only our legal department is working for the outstanding dues, also different legal firms are involved with the issue, ; chairman; chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said.
BTRC boss threatens political action
You (journalists) know sometimes the issue would not be only a legal aspect as there is political involvement...after the legal decision, if the money is not collected, I will raise the issue to the highest political level, he said.
Different operators, including cellular phone, IGW owe billions of Taka to the telecom regulator as revenue sharing.
Dr Mahmood, who took charges last month, expressed his determination while exchanging views with Telecom Reporters Network, Bangladesh (TRNB) at his office, reports BSS.
Dr Mahmood set call termination as the top most agenda on his to-do lists for the next three months.
He said My first priority is to set up a standard level of call termination, which could be followed as benchmark to maintain it.
I will also try to ensure the quality of services for the mobile phone users as the second priority, said Dr Mahmood.
About the third most main concern, the regulator chief said I must work for increasing people s trust and respect overcoming any kind of false propaganda prevailing in the market against the BTRC
Referring to illegal use of VoIP, Dr Mahmmood, who worked for US Navy before joining BTRC, said the issue also might get priority.
"We'll soon sit internally and also take help of technical experts to formulate a comprehensive master plan to curb the illegal use of VoIP, he added.
Mentioning his belief in transparency and openness, the BTRC head said if any organisation has not the two qualities, the organisation would not win people s respect and trust.
Dr Mahmood sought cooperation from the journalists as well as all the industry people for the betterment of the telecom sector.
